Alloa native Duncan Scott got his tournament off to a winning start for Team GB with a golden performance in his very first event at the European Games in Baku.

The talented swimmer, who was a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last summer, led his team off with a scintillating opening leg as they fought off a dogged Russian side to clinch the gold medals in the 4x100 freestyle relay race.

It was the teenage swim star’s first event at the games and after a morning of heats the mens Junior swimmers make it through to the finals for the 4 x 100 Freestyle.

The current Stirling University student, who is the only Scottish member of team GB in swimming, swam the first leg and led from the first 50m. The boys never looked back as tram mate Martin Walton also swam under 50seconds to maintain the lead. The Russians were always at their heals, but third swimmer Spiers kept his head and the lead before handing to Cameron Kurle, who fought for home in a games record at the inaugural European Games.

This was only day one and the British Team already have three golds in the bag in what looks like it might be a very fruitful meet for the swim team. Duncan himself still has three medal chances before the week is out as he goes in the 4x100 medley relay race, before his own individual events of the 100m & 200m Freestyle races.
