PEOPLE in the Wee County have the opportunity to get fit while improving the environment, by heading along to a new Green Gym group.

A session for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors while undertaking light duties to spruce up local spaces is being launched by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), in partnership with the Enabling Projects in Clackmannanshire (EPIC) charity.

With a focus of improving health, the Ochils Green Gym will take place every Wednesday and lasts around three hours, with the first meeting set for April 18.

And it will add to work being done by other groups that meet on Tuesday and Thursdays, which has seen volunteers help at the community woodland in Menstrie, Alva Glen and also Tillicoultry Glen.

David Walsh, senior project officer at TCV, said: "If you want to get outside doing something that you wouldn't do normally, doing something that's maybe out-with your skillset that you want to learn, just please come out.

"Clacks is such a beautiful county and it's kind of hidden away almost, it's kind of forgotten about.

"And I just want to get people out and actually experiencing it and doing something that they wouldn't normally do out in it.

"We would like to do exciting projects, something that leaves a mark on the community.

"I feel like the community it already starting to appreciate what we're doing and we want to do more and more and more."

The Green Gym is aimed at those who are seeking out lighter duties, who perhaps wouldn't manage more labour intensive, six hour work days.

Conservation in Clacks could include a whole range of things – delivering a boardwalk like volunteers have done previously in Dollar, partaking in woodland management, sowing a meadow or even going on nature walks.

It could be a great opportunity for older people, those with health issues, or simply anyone that wants to get out and get active.

David said: "We're hoping to just get people out and about in the Ochils doing lots of kind of cool nature work, learning some new skills, making some new friends – just experiencing it and helping the environment, helping the Ochils."
