A POPULAR Tullibody butcher has made a second charity donation, using the proceeds from the carrier bag charge.

Jim Hutchison, whose shop is located in Tron Court, handed over a £200 cheque to Strathcarron Hospice this week, just 12 months after donating £100 to the charity.

The money was raised solely through the profits of 5p carrier bag charged that was introduced by the Scottish government in 2014.

In April 2015, after just six months, Jim Hutchison & Sons had sold around 2000 bags, raising £100 for Strathcarron.

Since then, staff have continued in the same fashion, donating double the previous amount after twice as many bags were shifted.

Jim has paid tribute to those in the community who have continued to support the shop in its efforts.

He told the Advertiser: “It was just an idea we had when the 5p charge came in and, as it was successful before, we decided we’d do it again.

“We’ve had a lot of support from our customers since the charge came in and I think that’s because they know where the money is going.

“In fact, one customer comes in and buys five or six at a time because she uses them for her son’s pieces.”

He added: “Businesses are entitled to keep the money raised but we thought it would be a good opportunity to do some good for the community.

“We’re going to keep doing it. A family member of mine recently passed away due to cancer and Strathcarron is a cause near and dear to my heart.”
