For Jesus Jones frontman, Mike Edwards, performing in Scotland is a terrifying experience.

His nervousness stems not from rowdy audiences or the fear of flying lager cups, but just one word – family.

He said, “My kids are half Scottish so there’s a lot of relations up here who come so it has to be a really good gig. For me, personally, it’s fairly terrifying.” Edwards will again be bracing himself for an attack of nerves when he comes to Glasgow next week.

Indie act, Jesus Jones, will play the ABC on 16 September as part of a UK tour of their sophomore album ‘Doubt’, released to commercial and critical acclaim in 1991.

Edwards said, “There are some songs we’ve never played live, some we’ve not played in over 20 years and some songs we’ve not been able to play on tour.” It will be the first tour as the original line-up following the return of drummer Simon ‘Gen’ Matthews.

Gen quit the band in 1997 – the five-piece concedes that bridges were burnt on both sides – but following the decision by his replacement, Tony Arthy, to leave last year he was approached for a return, having previously guested on one-off gigs of first album ‘Liquidizer’.

Edwards said, “I’ve known him since we were 14. We’re both 50 now so that’s a lot of history. We’ve never been out of contact – the friendship didn’t stop. There are times when it feels like nothing has changed in 23 years.” For many, Jesus Jones will be best remembered for worldwide smash hit ‘Right Here Right Now’ (one of Edwards’ favourite records), which helped drive the success of ‘Doubt’. Other hits from their second LP included ‘Real Real Real’, ‘International Bright Young Thing’ and ‘Who? Where? Why?’.

At the time the band were on top of the world, scooping an MTV award for ‘Best New Artist’ and nomination for a Grammy, and went on to release three more albums, the last being ‘London’ in 2001.

The band are now heading back on the road, playing their second album in full – an album which Edwards describes as being “quite strange”.

He said, “There were new poppy songs and lot of stuff that was pre-Jesus Jones that I’d written five or six years beforehand, and a couple of songs written for the album. It feels a little like it was coupled together. It doesn’t have one clear vision.

“It reflects the time we made it. We were ridiculously busy touring. We’d start recording one song, go off on tour, then come back and start recording another song but it was our most successful album. It was at a time when I got the pop writing, song-writing down to the best of my ability.”
