For this week’s exciting adventure with the Clackmannanshire Hillwalking Club (affectionately known as the Clackies), a cycle trip was planned by our club cycle champion. We set off, 10 of us in total, with bikes loaded into cars; our destination was a small car park down a very narrow single track road, not too far from Bridge of Orchy.

We set off, the usual motley crew having varying levels of cycling prowess and fitness. We soon reached the scenic falls of Orchy where a stop was essential to take some photographs and to explore some of the amazing rock pools.

We took off again, soon reaching the main A82 road. With the wind behind us, and a very smooth road surface, an impressive 27.3 miles per hour was recorded!

Shortly afterwards we reached the comfort of the Bridge of Orchy Hotel, where, with an astounding lack of originality, we all ordered fish and chips (and those not driving enjoyed a well-earned pint of beer or cider!) The low point of the trip was leaving the warm and cosy hotel, and battling a strong cold headwind. A speed of 7.1 miles per hour was recorded, on the same stretch of road where we reached record speeds in the opposite direction.

Upon reaching the last turn-off, most of the group set off at a cracking pace and soon the welcome sight of the car park was observed. Bikes were then loaded onto, and into, cars and everyone set off for the fairly long drive home.

Unfortunately as it turned out my lift, the ever excellent cycle champion and organiser, was a long long way behind…but fortunately I made friends with Max and Jingle, two very friendly dogs, who seemed content to play fetch. I also enjoyed a blether with their very friendly camping family.

So eventually our organiser turned up and we set off, somewhat stiff and sore for the return drive. As ever, everyone had a terrific day.

Statistics for the cycle were average speed 10.8 mph. Distance 16 miles. Time for the trip one hour and 26 minutes actual cycling, although much longer with the stops.
