Brit Award Nominees:

The nominations for the 2012 Brit Awards have been announced and 20-year-old Ed Sheeran leads with four; British Male Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Single (The A Team) and Mastercard British Album of the Year (+). Fan favourite Adele trails with three (British Female Solo Artist, British Single for Someone Like You and Mastercard British Album of the Year for 21), but she could not have been nominated for British Breakthrough Act having been on the scene for a few years. Sheeran has sold over 900,000 copies of his debut studio record and has had three top 20 singles. The ginger-haired singer-songwriter will face stiff competition from the likes of Noel Gallagher, James Blake, James Morrison and Professor Green as will Adele with Florence + The Machine, Jessie J, Laura Marling and Kate Bush. Two-time Mercury Prize winner PJ Harvey could steal Album of the Year with Let England Shake, however these awards are mostly commercially led and with Adele and Jessie J having been former Brit School pupils, don't be surprised to see them take home at least a statue each. Coldplay have done well picking up nominations for British Group and Album of the Year, whilst Blur will be presented with Outstanding Contribution to Music. Personally, the hardest categories for me to call are International Female Solo Artist and International Breakthrough Act. While most will place their money on Beyoncé, GaGa or Rihanna, I'd rather see Feist walk away with the best female win. Surprisingly, no Katy Perry amongst the names. Up until Lana Del Rey's dismal SNL performance she could have taken best International Breakthrough Act as she is the 'cool' choice, but now it will most likely - and more deservedly - go to Nicki Minaj or Foster the People. The Brit Awards 2012 will take place on Tuesday 21 February at The O2 in London.
