ARTY school children showed off their creative skills by taking part in a design competition, organised by Sauchie Community Group.

Primary seven pupils at Deerpark and Craigbank primaries were tasked with the challenge of coming up with a Sauchie flag and brochure cover – to support the group’s plans for a mini Commonwealth Games style event in June.

Craigbank’s Jack Murray was named winner for his brochure design, while Deerpark pupil Adam Cruickshank came in first for his flag.

Jo Wilkinson, Commonwealth Games co-ordinator of the group, explained, “There was the suggestion that we have a flag representing Sauchie for the day, so that we could have our own flag in the parade.

“We just left it open to the children to draw a flag for Sauchie and the programme cover. We have to say thank you to both the schools for participating in the competition – they were very enthusiastic and supportive.

“Everybody was happy and everyone was really quite amazed at the support we got from the school and from the pupils. It was really difficult for the judges.” Earlier this year, Sauchie Community Group were awarded over £8000 in funding from the Big Lottery’s ‘Celebrate It Fund’ to organise events to raise awareness and enjoyment of the Commonwealth Games.

It is working on a mini games event for Saturday 14 June and details are still being finalised, but the hope is to kick things off with a parade from Sauchie Parish Church at 11.40am – featuring the winning flag.

It will travel down to Fairfield Park where a whole host of free activities will take place from noon until 4pm and attractions are set to include: a cross country race, stalls, tug of war, football, races, a bouncy castle, metafit demonstration, Riding for the Disabled demonstration, dancing demonstration, a DJ and more.

There will also be food items like burgers and ice-cream for sale.

It will be followed up by an evening event at the Oakwood, tickets are free but need to be collected from committee group members.

Jo added, “With Scotland being awarded the Commonwealth Games we thought we would have our own mini Commonwealth Games type event – that’s what it is.

“We would just like everyone to come and have a really enjoyable day. A lot of work has gone into this so the community can have a day off type of thing, and really enjoy themselves.” For stalls or to enter races contact Jo on 07914 123329 or pop into Sauchie Resource Centre on Tuesdays between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
