WEE COUNTY golfers clubbed together in a bid to recognise the wonderful care a good friend received from Strathcarron Hospice.

Members of Braehead Golf Club wanted to give something back to the charity, to mark the support it offered to former captain Willie Crews.

They managed to raise nearly £1000 for the organisation through a raffle and handed over a cheque to Jim Brown, community volunteer at Strathcarron.

The fundraiser was organised by a small group at the Alloa golf club who call themselves the Old Codgers, which was actually formed by Willie.

Bobby Lennox, one of the participants, said: "Members of Braehead Golf Club were delighted to present a cheque for £920 to Strathcarron Hospice which was in recognition of the dedicated care their staff gave to a good friend and former captain of the club, Willie Crews.

"This money was raised by means of a raffle organised by the Old Codgers group who would like to thank members and staff of Braehead Golf Club plus family and friends for their help and contributions."

Strathcarron provides free palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions that cannot be cured.

The charity does so through its hospice in Denny, and also gives support in the homes of patients, in hospitals and also in care homes.

Jim met with Bobby, Bob Whyte, Brian Christie and Alan McCann to accept the money and welcomed the donation, stressing that every bit helps.

He said: "We are absolutely delighted to have this very generous donation from the Old Codgers at Braehead Golf Club.

"The amount they have raised is enough to pay for caring for a patient for two days at the hospice, two days which could mean so much more for the patient and their family and friends.

"Although the hospice is partially funded (38 per cent) by the NHS, we still need to raise more than £12,900 each and every day to simply cover the costs.

"We currently have a campaign to raise £50,000 for essential roof repairs, so this wonderful donation from the club members in memory of Willie Crews is particularly timely."
