A TEENAGER has been detained at the High Court in Glasgow for raping a young woman at Bannockburn High School.

Grant Riddell has been told to serve three years for the "nasty attack", which took place in November 2016.

The court heard that the ordeal has had a "long-lasting" impact on his victim, who was 17 at the time.

The accused's lawyer begged the court to avoid a custodial sentence, claiming the assault was out of character for the teen.

He presented a number of references for the disgraced army cadet, including one from a major with the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

However, Judge Graeme Buchannan felt that for Riddell – found guilty of rape last month – custody was the only “appropriate” sentence.

He told him: "You have been convicted of a very serious offence which involved a nasty attack on your victim.

“It must be a matter of great shock to your family that you have ended up in this situation - convicted of rape at the High Court.”

Riddell will now be detained at a young offender's institute.

The accused, from Stirling, was placed on the sex offenders list indefinitely.
