THE November skies were once again lit up with a dazzling fireworks display in Dollar at the weekend.

Though the annual Guy Fawkes event had to be postponed to Sunday, November 4, due to a yellow weather alert for the original Saturday date, there was still a great turnout according to Dollar Community Council’s events co-ordinator Stephen Leitch.

Families gathered at New Field in the evening for the display with a huge bonfire.

They were protected from the cold thanks to some hot brews, soup and a barbecue with support from the town’s Brian Devlin Butchers.

With dozens of volunteers and a core team of hard grafters, putting the event on was a real community effort.

Stephen told the Advertiser: “The night went extremely well. We had about 37 volunteers out to help make it all happen in different areas.

"There was a special team who did all the heavy work in advance – a lot of thanks to them.

“Thank you to everybody for coming out. It was a fantastic night and we’ve already received a lot of positive comments from people.”

Plans to organise a fireworks display next year are already under consideration, but will be on hold until after the upcoming Winter Festival.

Starting on Friday, November 30, the weekend will be jam-packed with activities and Santa will be kicking things off with his annual tour of the town.

Then on Saturday, December 1, there will be a large marquee hosting the Christmas market, along with performances from local people, and a small art exhibition with pieces from Dollar.

And finishing it off will be the procession from the Civic Centre culminating in the switch-on of festive illuminations.
