PUPILS at a Wee County primary school rolled up their sleeves and cleaned up their community last week.

Volunteers from Fishcross PS spent Friday morning out cleaning the streets and parks of litter with help from parents, McDonald’s staff and Clacks MP Luke Graham.

The idea to get out and clean the area came after residents in the community complained about the amount of litter which was gathering in places.

Jess Kemp, headteacher at the school, told the Advertiser that the event helped to instil a sense of community pride among the children.

She said: “It went really well, it was very, very successful.

“It was carried out by P5-7 pupils who volunteered for it. They went down towards the cat’s protection then into the playing fields and into the park that they play in.

“The kids loved it," she added. "They even said it was great to be cleaning ‘our’ park. It was nice they referred to the park as theirs.”

In the end, it proved to be a successful venture as they collected nine bags of rubbish with an assortment of materials including plastic and cardboard.

All of the litter pickers were also joined by employees from McDonald’s, who had provided the equipment.

Mr Graham's assistance was also appreciated by the Jess and the team.

She continued: “It was nice of him to take an interest. It was just something for the community.

"It had been raised by people in the community so we wanted to help.”

The headteacher wanted to extend her warm thanks to McDonald’s, who also provided healthy meals and drinks for the pupils, as well as the parents who helped and of course to the volunteers for doing the picking.
