THE SNP have come out on top in the European Parliamentary Elections, receiving nearly 40 per cent of votes, both nationally and locally.

Across Scotland, the SNP took home 37.8 per cent of votes, followed by The Brexit Party with 14.8 per cent, and then the Lib Dems on 13.9 per cent.

Trailing behind were the Conservatives with 11.6, and Labour at just 9.3.

Locally, the SNP received 39.8 per cent of votes in Clacks, far ahead of The Brexit Party's 16.3, and the Conservative's 12.

The final results mean that three of Scotland's six MEPs will be from the SNP, along with one each from The Brexit Party, the Libs Dems and the Conservatives.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon claimed the results in Scotland demonstrate a will to stop Brexit, and vowed that her party would work to ensure that is what happens.

Keith Brown, Clacks MSP, said: "The results in Clackmannanshire was an emphatic rejection of Tory efforts to drag Scotland out of the EU against its will.

"For the past three years, Luke Graham MP has ignored his constituents, who have consistently voted to remain in the EU.

"His voting record on the EU is indicative of the chaos that has consumed the Tory party – last night was the clear wake up call he needed.

"Dropping to third is an embarrassing result for the Tories on what was basically a second referendum on their EU deal, no matter which way they try to spin it.

"He must now listen to his constituents, start representing them as members of parliament should, work to keep Scotland in the single market and customs union and give final say back to the people."

Mr Graham, Conservative MP, hit back and added: "The EU election results were to be expected, considering the circumstances, and although Conservative performance across the UK was lacklustre, in Clackmannanshire, the big move was pushing Labour to 4th place, a reminder that in our constituency it is between the Conservatives and the SNP.

"The SNP say we can't forget or ignore the 45 per cent from the 2014 referendum, but nor can we ignore the 38 per cent from the 2016 referendum.

"Scotland is a place of many voices, not one party. I will continue to work with MPs on both sides of the House of Commons to leave the EU with a deal.

Meanwhile, in a blow for Labour, the party's share of the vote in the Wee County was down by 20 per cent, compared to 2014, at 11.3.

Clacks resident Craig Miller, who was an MEP candidate for Scottish Labour, said: "It was clearly a disappointing night for the Labour Party, being squeezed by constitutional politics once again.

"However, it's important the Labour Party continues to build, in order to support those most in need of a Labour government, at every level."

The local authority announced that the turnout for the election in Clackmannanshire was 37 per cent.
