A DRINK-DRIVER who was described as being "intelligent man" was caught behind the wheel at more than five times the legal limit.

John Young appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court on Thursday, May 23, after pleading guilty to a single charge of drink driving at an earlier hearing.

The charge against the 61-year-old states that on March 30 of this year he drove his Jaguar on Hiltonhawk Way, Alloa, while under the influence.

When tested, he gave a reading of 125mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, well beyond the current 22mg in 100ml of breath limit.

According to defence agent Kelly Howe, representing Young, his most recent analogous conviction was in 2012.

She went on to say he is an "intelligent man", adding that this incident has acted as a "trigger" to take his "head out of the sand where it was with alcohol".

Indeed, since the offence, Young has started working with Signpost to tackle his alcohol issues and the court heard he will continue to do so in the future.

Sheriff David Mackie praised Young, of Lomond Court, Alloa, for taking steps to correct his behaviour and sentenced him to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months.

He has also been banned from driving for a period of three years.
