CORKS popped and pipes played as Kincardine families turned out in force to welcome back an old friend on Sunday.

For two years, Ilario's has been closed following a devastating blaze that gutted the High Street chippy, leaving it in need of a complete rebuild.

The popular eatery, which has been at the heart of the community serving up fish, chips and pizzas for 37 years, had a successful 'soft opening' to coincide with Kincardine Children's Gala before they formally cut the ribbon to mark their return at the weekend.

The celebrations, which included a performance by Tulliallan Pipes and Drums, drew what Riccardo Chicarella, whose father, Ilario, set up the business after moving to the village 42 years ago, described as an "amazing" turn-out.

"It was a great day and the kids loved it," he said.

"The fact that we're not just a chip shop is massive to my mum and dad. They support everything from the BBs (Boys Brigade) to the gala, and always will, as everything they (the community) give us we'll give back.

"It was amazing and my dad was dead emotional. He's a humble guy; he came from nothing, came to this country and built the business and had his family. He was dying to get the shop back open.

"To see our community there, clapping, was amazing and hopefully everyone can come and see us, try our food and not forget us."

Riccardo continued: "We believe in our product and think everyone else does.

"We've been really busy, and some people have just been coming in to see us and telling us they're happy we're back!

"Shirley-Anne Somerville (Dunfermline MSP) came round, which was a great touch. Soon after the fire, she contacted us right away and said they were massive fans as a family, and that if we needed anything, please let me know.

"That stuck in my dad's mind so, when we were starting to open, he said you have to get in touch and invited her as a guest.

"The community came out and said 'We support you', so we'd just like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us through the two years and now that we're open.

"It's a great village."
