THE previously proposed relocation of a supermarket in Alloa is set to go ahead this autumn.

Lidl has been eyeing a move to the Hilton Road are for years, with plans approved in early-2016.

However, store chiefs this week confirmed the store at the new location is due to open after the summer months.

It is set to create around 20 new jobs and increase its floorspace to 1325sq m from the current 872sq m at Candleriggs.

The new store will be located across from KFC and next to Alloa Fire Station.

A support statement with the planning application outlined: "The existing Lidl foodstore commenced trading in 1994 and was one of the first Lidl stores in the UK.

"As a result of both changing requirements for viable foodstores this store is substandard in terms of configuration, size and dedicated car parking for Lidl customers.

"Furthermore, since it was originally developed the Tesco and Asda superstores and the Aldi supermarket have all been built in close proximity.

"These stores are larger, more prominent, better configured and have dedicated customer car parking.

"This competition increases the need for upgrading the Lidl store to serve Alloa."

The current plans follow on from an application from 2014 and come as the chain just announced 12 new Scottish stores.

One of the main reasons for the move appears to be a requirement to increase in size and also a need for dedicated customer parking.

The support statement said: "Unfortunately it is not possible for these requirements to be met within its existing Candleriggs store which has resulted in the need for the company to identify a suitable site for a new replacement store.

"The only site that has been identified to be available and suitable for the replacement foodstore which serves Alloa is the application site located at Hilton Road."

Those attending matches at the Indodrill could also benefit from the plans.

The support statement explained: "The proposed development provides for car parking for staff and shoppers and service access.

"A further area of parking is also included in the application located on the west side of Hilton Road which will be available for use by Alloa AFC for overflow parking."
