CLACKS MSP Keith Brown has encouraged locals to take advantage of two new benefits aimed at supporting low income families with young children.

The Early Learning Payment (ELP) and School Age Payment (SAP) have been introduced by the Scottish Government as part of their ongoing efforts to tackle child poverty.

The ELP is worth £250, and can cover the costs associated with learning when children are aged between two and three and a half.

The SAP is also worth £250, and can be used to pay for preparing youngsters around P1 age for school.

The Scottish Government expects that between 40 and 50,000 families will benefit from the payments – and their overall aim is to reduce the financial hardship often faced by young families.

Elected rep Keith Brown has said he wants people in the Wee County to make the most of the newly introduced financial assistance.

He said: "I am delighted that eligible families in Clackmannanshire will now be able to apply for these two new entitlements.

"Costs associated with children starting education can quickly add up, so the Early Learning Payment and School Age Payment will go a long way to providing crucial support just when young families are most at need of some help.

"I would encourage all families that think they might be eligible to call 0800 182 2222 for help on how to apply."
