AN ALBION legend has been sharing memories of his time in football at a support group for older people.

Steve Burtenshaw, who played 237 times for the Seagulls between 1952 and 1966, has become a regular at a new group where elderly people can reminisce about their fondest sporting memories.

The 83-year-old is now a resident at the Guild Care Caer Gwent nursing home in Downview Road, Worthing.

Every Thursday from 10am to 11.30am Steve is taken to the Sporting Memories Group at Worthing Football Club.

He talks to other members of the group about his time in football – which spanned more than 50 years in both playing and management.

Steve will be well known among Albion fans for his 14 years as a hard-hitting midfielder.

He also spent time as a manager for Sheffield Wednesday, Everton, Queens Park Rangers and Arsenal.

The aim of the session is to engage older members of the community in social activities through their love of sport.

At the sessions Steve has struck up a friendship with former Arsenal star Vince Taylor.

Vince played for Arsenal in the 1940s before coming to Sussex to play for Worthing.

Steve said: “I really enjoy coming to the group and talking, as it stirs up lots of good memories from the past.”

One of the memories Steve recalled was playing opposite Manchester United legend Duncan Edwards in an England School Boys training match when he was just 15 years old.

Steve helped guide Albion to the Third Division (South) title in the 1957-58 season before also being part of the squad that won the Fourth Division title in 1964-65.

Sammy Paytner, a team leader at Caer Gwent, said: “It’s great to be able to bring Steve along to the club and talk about football which has been such a passion for him throughout his life, so we’re thankful to be able to come along each week. Everyone is so friendly and we all have a laugh together.”

Session leader Linda Bowen, of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, said “Keeping active and socialising is key to good physical and mental well-being.

“The aim of this club is to provide a fun, sociable and friendly atmosphere where all sports fans or ex-players are able to simply talk sport.”
