A STATIC Pride event is set to come to Alloa next month.

Forth Valley Pride will come to the Bowmar Community Centre on Saturday, August 10, between 1pm and 4pm, organisers advising there will not be a march.

It will be the second similar event in Alloa following a rainbow-clad procession in August 2016, which came in the wake of a homophobic hate incident earlier that year.

With Pride season in full swing, organisers Central Scotland Regional Equality Council (CSREC), LGBT Youth Scotland an S-X are hoping to make a positive expression against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, intersex and other LGBTI+ people to promote their identity, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity.

Those behind the event believe it is important to hold local events so LGBTI+ people and their allies can feel free to express their identity confidently, without fear in the place where they love, work, study and visit.

There will be plenty of activities on offer including a tea light holder painting, rock painting, smoothie bike, Dr Bike, music, fire engine demonstration and Pride postcard making.

The organisers will be there with information stalls and will be joined by Fort Valley Communities for Conservation, Equality Framework, Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface, Connect Alloa and Reachout With Arts In Mind.

Arun Gopniath, manager at CSREC, said: “We are proud to organise a Pride event locally in Forth Valley in partnership with LGBT Youth Scotland and S-X.

“Recent hate crime statistics and other reports have shown an increase in violence against LGBTI+ people.

“Despite the progress that has been made towards LGBTI+ equality we have to be sure that in the currently polarised global environment it is important for the LGBTI+ community and allies come out to show support so that our rights are protected.”

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York, the global starting point of the Pride movement.
