THERE was disappointment after an Alloa church building was broken into in broad daylight last week in what appeared to be an incident of vandalism.

Moncrieff UF Church was targeted sometime between 11am and 1.50pm last Friday, July 19, with local police looking to trace those responsible.

It is understood a door around the side of the building was forced open to gain access to a boiler room in the basement.

The individual or group responsible damaged a pipe connected to the water mains and it was only the quick discovery of the incident that avoided serious damage.

The minister, Rev Jason Lingiah, told the Advertiser: “It’s disappointing as we’ve had no issues since I’ve been here for two years.

“It’s quite saddening that this time of the year things are happening like this.

“We don’t know who it is yet, but it does kind of create a wee bit of fear in the town centre and even the neighbouring houses on Primrose Street.

“There’s no major damage, a tap was left on which created a dim [sound] which came to our attention – the water was going on to plastic.

“However, if it had been left unattended it could have resulted in significant water damage to the foundations and damp and condensation in the church.”

It is understood the boiler that had pipework damaged was already not in use and locks to the basement were swiftly replaced.

The Rev added: “It is very-very disappointing that someone would want to do this to a church and also it does cause a wee bit of fear for town centre residents too during the holiday period when people are often away.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police in Alloa are investigating following a break-in to a church.

"The incident happened sometime 11am and 1.50pm on Friday, July 19, at the premises in Drysdale Street.

"At this time it appears nothing has been taken, however, inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to come forward."
