A THEATRE is set to close ahead of a major refurbishment.

Hurstpierpoint Players bought a disused grocery store in 1976 and transformed it into a theatre in High Street, Hurstpierpoint.

But the well-loved building is showing its age and needs new seating and lighting.

The Players have been fundraising for many years to fund the works, which are expected to cost more than £100,000. They are now just a few thousand pounds short of their target.

The theatre will close in October for work to be completed ahead of their Christmas production in December.

Anne Hooper, from the group, said: “Added to generous donations from many local friends, tremendous financial support has also been received in response to appeals to local authorities, businesses, societies and from our fellow High Street friends.

“Any combination would be a welcome conclusion to The Players’ efforts to keep this community facility – including its provision now and in the future for the community’s young people at Centre Stage.”
