Scottish Lowland Football League:

Cumbernauld Colts 2 Kelty Hearts 1

KELTY HEARTS were brought back to earth following their cup exploits after Cumbernauld Colts struck late to inflict their first defeat of the season.

Barry Ferguson's men travelled to North Lanarkshire on the back of a penalty shoot-out success at Annan Athletic in the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Cup last midweek.

But, during a frustrating afternoon at Broadwood, Stephen O'Neill's 87th minute strike – just minutes after Nathan Austin had levelled the match – proved decisive as Hearts were leapfrogged by Colts, who sit one place above in third.

After completing the loan signing of young Pars defender Thomas Bragg, Ferguson pitched the 17-year-old into his starting line-up, and they almost grabbed an early lead when another new boy, Cammy Russell, came close to connecting with a fine Gary Cennerazzo centre.

Thomas Reilly rattled the frame of Colts' goal with a fine free kick but it was the hosts who opened the scoring four minutes before the break.

Moments later, Kelty were denied by the crossbar for a second time with Scott Linton's well-taken set-piece, but they missed a golden chance to level 11 minutes after the break.

After making his way into the box, Russell was sent sprawling after a rash challenge by Michael McInespie, but Linton could only watch as his spot-kick was blocked by Colts goalkeeper Jonathon Grier.

Incredibly, Linton then struck the bar again with a rasping shot from range as Kelty pressed, and with seven minutes left, they were rewarded when Austin controlled a long ball into the box before firing past Grier from 12 yards.

That looked to have rescued a point but, on the break, O'Neill was sent racing in on goal to fire home the winner.

Football Nation Qualifying Cup, first round:

Bo'ness United 4 Oakley United 2

STEWART KENNY admitted he was "gutted" for his Oakley United players after they gave Bo'ness United a cup scare.

The Blairwood Park men, one division below their East of Scotland League Premier Division opponents, led twice in a game that was played at Camelon's Carmuirs Park.

Oakley led at the break and went ahead again after Chris Donnelly equalised, with Terry Hewitt making it 2-2 with 20 minutes to go.

Late efforts by Brian Morgan and Ryan Stevenson won the day for Bo'ness, and Kenny said: "I was gutted for the boys. They were a wee bit down at the end but they did everything they could; they maybe just had that wee bit more quality and experience.

"We went 1-0 up and 2-1 up, and in the last 15 minutes, the lads still gave everything they could."

Football Nation Qualifying Cup, first round:

Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 3 Tweedmouth Rangers 2

INVERKEITHING Hillfield Swifts bounced back from their first defeat of the season by recording their second victory in four days on Saturday.

After a 2-1 defeat at Dalkeith Thistle, they returned to winning ways in the East of Scotland League First Division, Conference B against Stirling University in midweek before edging Tweedmouth Rangers on Saturday in the Football Nation Qualifying Cup.

Lee Duffy's side broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Ryan O'Connor fired the ball across goal for Callum Murray to tap home at the back post.

Tweedmouth grabbed an equaliser after the break but Callum Strang put the Swifts back into the lead and, in the final minute, won his side a penalty when he was brought down by goalkeeper Danny Fletcher, who was ordered off.

Strang stepped up and converted from 12 yards and, although Craig Colquhoun netted in the dying moments, Swifts had done enough to earn a second round tie with Bo'ness United.

Football Nation Qualifying Cup, second round:

Ormiston 0 Crossgates Primrose 5

PRIMROSE boss Alan Campbell has urged his players to use their cup cruise at Ormiston as the catalyst to kick-start their campaign.

The Humbug Park outfit put three successive defeats behind them by recording an emphatic first win of the season in East Lothian.

Their opponents only held out for nine minutes when captain Scott Lawrie slotted home the opener.

Two goals in the space of as many minutes on the stroke of half-time from Ryan Cowie and Lewis Sawers put the visitors firmly in command and, with less than 10 minutes played in the second half, another goal each for Cowie and Lawrie – the latter of which came from the penalty spot – completed a fine afternoon's work.

Campbell commented: "It was a resounding win in the end. We were a wee bit wary as we played down there last year in a cup tie, and they caused us a few problems, but we made a good start and were clinical.

"The park was fiery, and there was a big wind, but we managed to get to grips with it and I thought we were well worth our win and the five goals we got.

"The clean sheet was probably the biggest thing from my point of view, but it was a good day, a good performance and we're into the third round. I said to the players after the game, let's make this the start of our season, and forget the first couple of games. The first three games didn't go to plan, but we've got three home games in the league, so it's a chance to kick-on."

McBookie.com Premier League South:

Sauchie 3 Rosyth 2

DISAPPOINTED Brian Muirhead felt that a failure to match Sauchie's energy contributed to Rosyth's second league defeat.

The visitors arrived in Clackmannanshire on the back of a 5-0 midweek win at West Calder United – thanks to a Gregg Page double, Tam Hampson, Declan Pierce and Jack Henderson – but fell behind after just five minutes at Beechwood Park.

Henderson pulled the visitors level in the 26th minute, before having a penalty saved, only for Sauchie to edge back in front on the hour mark.

Barry Sibanda levelled for a second time as the game moved into the final quarter but, with six minutes left, the hosts grabbed the winner after Rosyth failed to clear.

Muirhead said: "We lost the game because we didn't win as many second balls, as many tackles, or run as much as them.

"They ran, chased and harassed; credit to them. We didn't match them in terms of energy levels and didn't win enough battles.

"The group's talented – we've got some fantastic players – but they need to put the hard yards in, and that's what we'll be working on this week."
