ELDERLY residents in Clacks are having to pay “ridiculous” amounts of money to collect their pension following the closure of the Post Office in Little Greens.

Alloa Community Council (ACC) last week said they were aware of some people spending almost £10 on taxi journeys just to receive their entitlements.

Pensioners in Clacks who used the Alloa Post office have been left in limbo since Eros Retail decided to close their Little Greens store on Mill Road earlier this month.

As the shop was also home to the Post Office, Alloa’s elderly population have been having to travel to areas such as Sauchie to collect their pension instead.

The Post Office have said the closure is only temporary until they find a new venue to base themselves.

But no alternative premises have yet been found; however, the Mists of Time vaporizer store has expressed an interest in housing the Post Office in store.

In the meantime, Wee County pensioners are being left out of pocket.

A spokesperson for the Alloa Community Council told the Advertiser: “We have heard how individuals have had to pay £9 for a taxi to pick up their pension elsewhere, which is ridiculous.

"Whilst it is positive that a shop is keen to host the post office it is very unfortunate that pensioners will have to incur extra costs until a final decision is made."

The spokesperson added: "Alloa Community Council were involved in the previous campaign to ensure there is a Post Office in Alloa as a Post Office is vital to the community. The Post Office at Alloa was well used, judging by the queues."

The community council also highlighted that the Post Office is the only place to pay in cheques to RBS, since the bank walked out of Alloa town centre.

Negotiations are ongoing between the Post Office and the Mists of Time store.

A social media post from the business added: “We can confirm we are in talks with the Post Office.

“My business is very flexible and therefore if [they] have requirements on what I can and cannot sell, I will deal with that.”

The Advertiser did not receive comment from the Post Office before going to print.
