ACCESS to Alva Glen has been drastically improved thanks to the recent installation of a new bridge at the site.

The £16,000 addition to the Clacks beauty spot replaces an old pathway which was in danger of becoming unstable.

Now, people will be able to enjoy safer access to the ancient hill terraces and cascading waterfalls at the renowned gorge at the foot of the Ochil Hills.

Cllr Donald Balsillie, vice convenor of the council's Place Committee, said: "The council supports initiatives that help to improve and maintain our natural heritage.

"And while the council has provided this new bridge, I would like to thank the Alva Glen Heritage Trust (AGHT) for their regular maintenance and improvement works in the glen.

"It is through partnership that we can truly care for our local environment."

The elected rep was also keen to highlight just how beneficial a trip to the glen can be.

He said: "Alva Glen is not only a beautiful place to visit, but also a place where you can improve your health and wellbeing.

"Simply walking and being in contact with nature is known to reduce stress and improve fitness, which produces many health benefits for the young and old alike so I'd recommend everyone takes a walk in Alva Glen."

The council works in partnership with AGHT – a group of dedicated volunteers who manage the area – to ensure the site retains its natural beauty all year round.

Around a dozen of AGHT's volunteers rolled up their sleeves just a few weeks ago for a clean-up of the area.

They filled bags with rubbish that had been dumped, planted native wildflowers and carried out path maintenance work for the benefit of those making the most of the glen during summer.

And in anticipation of the large numbers of keen visitors, the Ochils Mountain Rescue Team carried out a major training exercise in the glen in July.
