Each month, we feature an inspiring individual who is working wonders in his or her community. Do you know someone who has stepped up to solve a local problem or to create something special? Email ann.fotheringham@heraldandtimes.co.uk with the details. This month, we catch up with Darren Cassidy, 33, from Govan who is one of Glasgow City Council’s Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers (NIVs).

Day job: Cabin crew.

Why did you decide to become a NIV? Since moving to Govan with my partner I’ve witnessed what it has to offer and where it has fallen by the wayside. A home is not just four walls and a roof, it’s a community, safety, and ultimately something a person can be proud to call their own. Govan is evolving and I thought that if I could aid its growth even a little within my own street then it may encourage others to follow suit. It is easy to be complacent but when that leads to litter, rundown plots of land laden with fly tipping and children unable to play outside then it is time to take stock.

What does your role involve? By liaising with the local neighbourhood improvement officer I have managed to install planters on a once-derelict piece of land used for fly tipping, and through a network of kind, supportive and encouraging neighbours, a true sense of community has formed. One put up a new fence, another donated materials, another helped with costs. I have found in my time here that people are always more than willing to lend a hand if only they are asked. It was a pleasant surprise to find someone had left bulbs by the planters and though it was a small act of kindness, it has contributed to the ever growing sense of community. Small projects like this can act as a catalyst for bigger things and hopefully inspire others to follow.

Who inspires you? Govan philanthropist Isabella Elder, because of her commitment to and care of her community.

Best piece of advice you have received? “Believe in yourself and never give up on your aspirations.”

Worst piece of advice you have received? A passer-by asked: “What’s the point?” when I was clearing up the land for the planters.

Favourite spot in Glasgow? Pollok Park - an oasis within our city. I have fond childhood memories from there and it remains a beautiful park.

Describe yourself in three words: Loving, determined, and persistent.
