A COMMUNITY learning campus for the south of Alloa is being proposed at Clackmannanshire Council.

On Thursday, elected representatives will hear how the move would incorporate schools and integrate broader community facilities.

The latter would include the likes of the Bowmar Centre and Alloa Family Centre.

A campus in Alloa South would bring together Alloa Academy, Park PS and Park Nursery and ABC Nursery.

Documents to be tabled at this week's full council meeting said: "The advantage of a well-designed community campus is that it would lead to greater integration of services for individuals and families of all ages.

"To date, a concept design has been undertaken, incorporating a number of learning opportunities including links with Forth Valley College, City Deal initiatives and intergenerational links."

St Mungo's RC Primary School, which has been sharing facilities at the academy after its own building was closed last year, was only mentioned briefly in the documents.

As reported in 2018, an ingress of water resulting from complex groundwater conditions forced the school building's closure.

Despite two separate reports being commissioned by the local authority, the exact cause was never found and there was no guarantee that any repair works, which could have come to around £1.8million, would fix the issue for good.

What tomorrow's council papers do reveal is that an appraisal will be required for St Mungo's by 2021, relating to an "Alloa South option" – suggesting plans are indeed to incorporate the RC school as well.

Documents added: "[The] old St Mungo's building mothballed pending future reviews."

The idea for an Alloa South Campus did surface around a year ago in an FAQ to parents of St Mungo's RC pupils.

However, Father Michael Freyne, who sits on council as a representative when it comes to educational matters, at the time indicated that the church had no desire to be a part of another shared campus – referring to St Bernadette's RC and the Tullibody South Campus.
