COMMITMENTS on the future of St Mungo’s RC Primary School were given by councillors last week.

As reported ahead of last Thursday’s, December 19, council meeting, elected representatives were asked to approve an “options appraisal” for an Alloa South Campus.

But the outline proposals made no explicit mention of the denominational school, which only featured in the appendix to indicate it would indeed be a part of the campus.

St Mungo’s is currently based at Alloa Academy in a dedicated space after the school’s building was decanted due to an ingress of water.

Council leader Councillor Ellen Forson sought to rectify the issue with an amendment, passed unanimously, to highlight there are plans for St Mungo’s as part of the campus and to give a commitment to its future and to its identity.

The outline idea for the Alloa South Campus, was hailed as “hugely exciting” by Cllr Graham Lindsay, spokesman for education, who highlighted it could enhance community integration, in a similar vein as the successful campus in Tullibody.

Pastor David Fraser of Alva Baptist Church explained to the chamber Father Michael Freyne was previously against the idea of another shared campus, which he felt stemmed form issues arising in the design process as “things moved so fast, some things had been missed”.

He gently urged the council to do better in consultation and praised the hard work going into the idea so far.
