The Scottish SPCA has celebrated its first wildlife release of the year after Chequers the grey seal was successfully returned to the wild.

Welfare officers had been caring for Chequers at its National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, after he'd been found very underweight in the Western Isles.

He and four other seal pups named Golf, Lego, Hungry Hippo and Battleship were released at Broughty Ferry on January 8.

Graeme Innes, rescue centre manager, said: "Chequers is the first wild animal we've released back into the wild in 2020.

"He was very underweight and only around two-to-three-weeks-old when he first arrived at the centre on October 20, 2019.

"Seeing him getting stronger every day to the point where he was able to be released has been so rewarding.

"We care for almost 200 seals each year so Chequers and his friends are the first of many.

"We'd also like to thank British Divers Marine Life Rescue who assisted with the release."
