THE history of shopping in Alloa is set to come to life in a talk tomorrow (Weds).

Friends of Clackmannanshire Heritage will hear from Robert Thomson, who is bringing his talk entitled Were You Being Served? – focusing on the story of shopping in Alloa.

It will take place at St Mungo’s RC Church Hall on Mar Street at 7.30pm.

As Alloa was developing as an industrial town in the 19th century, its population and wealth increased and so did the demand for commodities.

Streets in the centre of Alloa had numerous corner shops and other independently owned businesses while to Scottish Co-operative and Wholesale Society offered the only department store at Primrose Street.

With a long interest of Clackmannanshire’s heritage, Robert will bring the past alive with his extensive collection of postcards, photographs and newspaper cuttings.

The talk will be accompanied by many images, focusing on the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries.

Non-members are welcome to the talk, which will be rounded off with refreshments and a raffle.
