A YOUNG Wee County footballer has been called up to represent his country in an upcoming tournament.

Lucas Williamson, who currently plays with Alloa Athletic’s reserve team, has made the 18-man squad for the Scottish Schools’ Boys Under 18 International squad for the 2020 Centenary Shield.

16-year-old Lucas was part of Falkirk’s Forth Valley Football Academy and also played for Celtic before joining Alloa.

After playing for the regional schools’ team and then the regional team, he was asked to go the national trials.

Two matches were played at Toryglen, the regional football centre, and after impressing the coaches Lucas made the squad, despite being one of the youngest on trial.

His proud dad Scott said Lucas, who also attended the trials last year aged 15 but didn’t make the final squad, is “absolutely delighted.”

Lucas can play at left-back or in the middle of defence and Scott compared him to Scotland captain Andy Robertson in the way he “bombs up and down the left flank.”

The 18-man squad was announced on December 12 and the group played their first match against the Albion Rovers FC reserve team on December 20, losing 2-1.

Scotland will play several warm-up games in the lead up to the Centenary Shield, which starts on Friday, March 6 with a home game against Northern Ireland.

They will then travel to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland near the end of March before hosting Wales on April 3.

Those three games set up a huge final game against the auld enemy England in Hull on April 9.

All boys who have been called up to the squad have been asked, where possible, to gain sponsorship in order to pay for match-day suits and training kit.

Any business or person who sponsors a player will be featured on the SSFA website and match programmes and will also be invited to the home games.
