A WEE COUNTY personal trainer has urged people to keep active for the sake of their mental and physical health during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Alloa’s Dan Hancock says the government’s strict “stay at home” instructions – while absolutely necessary – could have a huge impact on people’s wellbeing if they don’t look after themselves.

He told the Advertiser: “I know we have to self-isolate and everyone understands the importance of it, but the impact this could potentially have on people’s mental health is huge.

“If people are stuck inside and getting cabin fever, and if they get into that slump, it’s very difficult to get out of it, so people need to remain active.”

Helpfully, Dan also provided some useful advice as to how people can do just that.

He said: “I think you can look at it from two different perspectives: the physical health and the mental health.

“So in regard to physical fitness, people are used to being up and about throughout the day.

“Even if they have a desk job, they are still getting up and moving.

“Now people are going to be stuck inside, and I know from myself I have been on the couch doing work.

“Before you notice it you have been sitting there for four hours, so it’s important to be on your feet and mobile for as much as possible.”

This could take the form of simply working while standing at the kitchen counter, or moving around throughout the house during short breaks.

But, perhaps most importantly of all, Dan urged people to take advantage of the one outdoor exercise slot allowed by the government each day.

He said: “During Boris’ speech one of the first things he mentioned is we’re allowed out to exercise – which is amazing.”

As the prime minister advised, Dan recommends people take that opportunity to go for a walk, run, or cycle.

Turning to mental health, he said: “The important thing is to have some structure.

“For comparison, you know what it’s like over the Christmas period: eating too much, sleeping in.

“Always set an alarm, keep a diary to prioritise everything – keep structure throughout the day and exercise.”
