THE number of positive cases of coronavirus in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has risen once again as the Scottish death toll rose to 47.

New figures just released by the Scottish Government show the health board's numbers rose from 401 to 449 overnight.

The health board is responsible for care in Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.

In total 1,563 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, an increase of 179 from Sunday.

There are currently 108 people in intensive care with the virus, or with symptoms suspected to be COVID-19.

At the Scottish Government's daily media briefing, Scotland's chief medical officer Dr Catherine Calderwood said the peak of COVID-19 in Scotland was expected to place in two to three weeks.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also revealed that the SEC in Glasgow is set to become a temporary NHS hospital for NHS Great Glasgow and Clyde.

She said: "I can confirm today following exploratory work over the last week and the weekend, we have taken the decision to start turning the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow into a temporary NHS hospital.

"If needed, we expect the hospital could become operational within a fortnight from now.

"Initially it could provide us with an additional 300 beds, but ultimately it could have capacity for more than 1,000 patients."
