TILLICOULTRY residents are mourning the sad loss of one of their true community stalwarts.

The immediate family of Elma Mitchell will gather on Tuesday, April 14, for her funeral at Tillicoultry Cemetery following her death two weeks ago.

Elma was a dedicated volunteer when it came to causes such as the local gala day or the Devonvale Hall.

She was also a great supporter of the Christmas lights appeal in Coalsnaughton, clean up days in the area and much more.

Since her friends and colleagues announced her passing, tributes have been pouring in on social media.

Leading tributes was the community council's chairperson Damian Sherwood-Johnson.

He said: "It is with great sadness that we let the community know of the death of our friend and colleague, Elma Mitchell.

"Elma was a long-serving member of the community council who contributed a huge amount to its activities.

"She thoroughly loved her role and was immensely generous with the time that she gave to serve her community.

"She will be greatly missed by her fellow community councillors and other community members she worked alongside and supported."

Elma passed away peacefully at Forth Valley Royal Hospital following a short period of illness on Tuesday, March 31.

The 77-year-old will be sorely missed by her loving family including husband Robert, son Colin and daughter-in-law Louise as well as grandchildren Rhyan and Deryn.

With so many years of community work behind her, many came forward to pay tribute to Elma, who was perhaps best known for her efforts in keeping the Devonvale Hall open.

On social media, resident Claire McKay said: "Elma was a community stalwart and she dedicated so much of her time and effort to make this wee community a better place to be.

"She will be greatly missed and thoughts are very much with family at this sad time."

Councillor Helen Lewis added: "So sad to hear this.

"A real community person who will be remembered well for everything she has done particularly keeping Devonvale Hall open. RIP Elma."

Gail Walker, from the local flood response group TIDECO, also paid tribute and said: "Very sad news and so sudden.

"Elma was a lovely lady and a good neighbour.

"She will be sorely missed. Condolences to her family and friends."

Responding to the heart-felt tributes, bereaved son Colin added: "Thanks to all for your comments.

"My parents were never happier than when they were giving back to the community, whether it be Devonvale Hall, the gala, or any council work."
