A FOOD van business in the Wee County has adapted to the coronavirus lockdown by introducing a meal kit delivery service.

Fishcross couple Liam and Beth Davies have been running a street food truck under the name Stag Bites The Hog, but their plans for a busy season were crushed by the outbreak.

Rather than letting their heads hang low, the two chefs decided to take their unique street food right into people's homes by creating and delivering self-assembly meal kits.

And with a "terrific response" from customers so far, Liam and Beth are onto the third week of delivering from their Alloa business unit.

Liam, whose business mainly specialises in pork and venison dishes, told the Advertiser: "We wanted to offer a product whereby the customer can get involved with assembling the meal, seeing their masterpieces before they devour it.

"It's been a great response from couples in particular and even whole families wanting to get in on the act.

"The kits can be designed for any number of people from one to however many that may be in the household."

The offering changes each week; the kits come with all the ingredients, instructions and some top tips too.

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and other free from allergen options are available too.

Liam and Beth were set for a busy couple of months with their old but trusty converted food truck called Ronnie – a Citroen H boasting a lively orange livery.

Indeed, they were lucky not to get stuck on a Vegas holiday celebrating his birthday.

Liam said: "After just moving in to our new unit in Alloa we were ready to hit the ground running with the busy season around the corner.

"We had so many cool events coming up like The Royal Highland Show's 180th birthday, Eat and Drink Festival at the SECC and many private events.

"When these events started cancelling and postponing then we knew it was going to be more of a long-term scenario."

While they were a little unsure whether the self-assembly kits would be a hit, the duo knew there would be some interest from previous interactions with customers.

Liam added: "It's been a terrific response so far.

"It's been great to see so many people wanting take up the challenge of creating something different as opposed to just opting for takeaway every other night."

And for those who may not be inclined to assemble their own but are still looking for a tasty meal, the business also offers some oven-ready dishes that go above and beyond of their supermarket counterparts.

"We go out our way of jazzing up the dish," Liam said.

"The stovies last week, for example, was partnered up with home made oatcakes and locally-picked wild garlic butter."

The couple have also started another project called The Teahouse Bakery, looking to deliver some afternoon teas and tasty treats to homes.
