FREE school meals in the Wee County have been extended to cover the summer holidays, making sure no child goes hungry during the coronavirus pandemic.

Clackmannanshire Council's Emergency Decision Making Forum, established in the days before lockdown was officially announced, has agreed the extension this Monday, June 15.

It means that families who are eligible for free school meals and are receiving clothing and footwear grants will be supported with £23 per fortnight for each child.

The money will continue to be paid direct into bank accounts, or through alternative means, and the move comes in response to the closure of schools.

The last payment will be made on July 30 with children set to return to schools from August 12.

Councillor Ellen Forson, council leader, said :”Now more than ever, it is important that we support the most vulnerable members of our community.

“We want to ensure that no child goes hungry during the summer break.

“By continuing to ensure that those children who are eligible for free school meals receive the support required during the summer holidays, we are working to alleviate concerns over poverty due to Covid-19.”

It has also been agreed to provide 600 grab food bags a day during the weekdays to support local communities.

These will be delivered to local distribution points throughout the Wee County.

The council leader added: “In addition, by supplementing the payments with additional 'grab food bags', it means that those who potentially just miss out on entitlement can access provision in their local community.”
