Anti-racism group to hold rally in George Square tomorrow after thugs disrupted peaceful protest

Stand Up to Racism Glasgow are "calling on anti-racists to join a socially distanced action to send a positive anti-racist message from Glasgow's George Square to the world". 

It comes just days after racist thugs clashed with protesters calling for the protection of asylum seekers in the city.

Members from the National Defence League fought with campaigners from No Evictions Glasgow in more ugly scenes in the square. 

There were clashes in the city's George Square on Wednesday night

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf were among those to join in the wide condemnation of the shameful clashes. 

Members from Stand Up to Racism also hit out at the right wing thugs and have now called for the city to join together to peacefully mark World Refugee Day tomorrow. 

They said on a post: "We are calling on anti-racists to join a socially distanced action to send a positive anti-racist message from Glasgow's George Square to the world.

"We want to reiterate our opposition to racism and the treatment of asylum seekers in our city who are being abandoned, made destitute and treated like dirt by the UK Govt’s Hostile Environment.

"On UN World Refugee Day we say it loud and clear—refugees are welcome here." 

The group has also urged those attending to wear a mask, follow social distancing measures, and not use public transport. 

The event is due to take place from 10.30am.
