A FUNDRAISING drive to ensure all children will receive a Christmas gift this year has been launched in the Wee County.

As part of its wide-ranging response to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, Alloa Round Table is looking to net money for less fortunate children in an online campaign.

Members are hoping to raise as much as £500 to help fight Covid-19 and to bring a little joy for children whose families might find themselves in tough circumstances due to the "terrible virus".

The people behind the initiative have pledged to complete the Alloa Half Marathon, one of their usual major fundraisers which cannot go ahead this year, route at least once each to cover 150 miles together.

Since the lockdown started, Alloa Round Table has been looking to do its bit to make a difference in Clacks.

Steven Campbell, chairman, said: "Alloa Round Table are here to support local good causes and during this pandemic we wanted to support the elderly and primary schools.

"This terrible virus has affected our fundraising activities and, so far, we have had to postpone the 2020 Alloa Half Marathon and cancel the annual fireworks event which will reduce our charitable activities now through to 2021."

At the start of the pandemic, members decided to buy hand sanitiser from nearby company Stirling Gin, which added the Covid-19 essential to its production line.

These were delivered to three local care homes March Glen, Beechwood Park and Hillview.

The charitable team then offered all local primary schools funding for any project helping children during the current uncertain times.

Abercromby, Fishcross and Coalsnaughton primaries all requested assistance and received tablet computers to ensure young people can continue learning from home.

The schools were also given art packs to keep children busy and Alloa Round Table footed repair bills for external storage.

This was made possible thanks to a successful application for funding to the Corra Foundation.

Steven added: "I'd like to thank the Corra Foundation for supporting our project and CTSI for nominating us for the fund.

"We have set up a Just Giving page which will allow us to fund kids' Christmas presents this year – we would be grateful if you would donate.

"As part of this all our members will be completing the Alloa Half Marathon route."
