A 10-month-old baby boy has fallen into a coma after accidentally biting into a washing detergent liquid capsule.
Within the space of 30 minutes after biting into the capsule, Pearce Shepherd went from in good health to turning completely pale, vomiting, coughing and losing consciousness.
The Lennoxtown family rushed alongside Pearce to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow after the toxic chemicals burned his stomach, causing his lungs to swell up with mucous. Pearce remains at the hospital in an induced coma.
Pearce's Mum Melissa Cairney has now shared a public warning to other parents to keep liquid capsules out of reach from children as she prays for her son's recovery.
She wrote: "Don’t want to go into full detail but wanted to urge people to keep washing liquid capsules well out off reach of kids/babies, I was aware of the danger of these but only to a certain extent!
"Worst of all Was my first time buying them.
"In the blink of an eye on Friday my little monster got hold of one and bit a tiny hole in which a tiny bit entered his mouth and within 30 minutes he went from normal to vomiting/pale/coughing and worst of all in and out of consciousness.
"Everything happened so fast I was lucky to get him to hospital just in time.
"My poor baby went straight to theatre and is now in intensive care, sedated and has breathing tube doing all the work for him as well as a whole lot of other things."
The Daily Record reported that medics told Pearce's mum and dad he is likely to survive, however they don't know how long it will take him to recover or what the long-term effects will be.
Melissa added: "I am totally broken and can’t bear to see him this way but I know he is in the best place with the best people - they really are special people and I pray so hard he’s better and home soon, he has definitely has kept me on my toes.
"Sharing this post in the hope it makes people more aware of just how dangerous these are and if you're ever in that situation don’t stop and think for one second. Seek medical attention ASAP."
