A FRESH funding boost for an Alloa charity is to help tackle food poverty in the Wee County during the coronavirus crisis.

Sauchie Community Group last week handed over a cheque for £2,000 to The Gate Foodbank in a bid to make sure there are enough food parcels for everyone in need in Clackmannanshire.

The sum takes the total amount donated to foodbank by the group to £7,750 over the past six months.

Craig Miller, co-manager at the community group, said: "The Gate Foodbank does fantastic work supporting those in need.

"I am delighted that Sauchie Community Group was able to give a further £2,000 donation to continue to reach those who could otherwise go hungry.

"We have tried to support The Gate charity throughout the lockdown period where we have had the resources and funds to do so and to recognise that they do amazing work every day."

The donation was made possible thanks to funding support received from the Big Lottery and the STV Children's Appeal.

Craig said: "Thanks to the Big Lottery and STV appeal, we have been able to secure £7,750 to help alleviate some of the barriers to food provision.

"As part of our funding, we have also been able to provide stationery and activity packs, memory books, resources for those with dementia and also a range of entertainment."

As reported by the Advertiser at the end of May, The Gate Foodbank saw a massive increase in referrals during the ongoing pandemic while donations fell significantly.

Craig added: "There is still a lot of uncertainty with the pandemic, but everyone at Sauchie Community Group has been impressed by the community spirit, resilience and determination to support each other through these difficult times."
