WEE Ginger Dug writer Paul Kavanagh has launched a rehab fundraiser after a stroke left him paralysed down one side.

The National columnist and independence campaigner was taken to hospital last week after his husband found him suffering symptoms of a stroke.

Paul spoke from the Southern General on Friday, saying: “At one point I did wonder if I was dying, I thought it was really bad and I’ve never felt so shite in my whole life, not even when the f***ing Tories won the election.

“But I’m still here and though I have this paralysis, the doctors think I will get some movement back though how much they can’t say. It’s early days yet, and it will take a long time.”

The author stressed that he may be out of action for some time – as he is left-handed and now paralysed on that side, he will need to learn to type again.

Paul last night launched a crowdfunder to help him find a new home which can be adapted to his needs – he currently lives in a top-floor tenement flat.

The description on the fundraiser reads: “I am doing this crowdfunder to raise money to put towards buying a wee cottage or a ground floor flat that can be adapted to my needs.

“I hope to raise £50,000 which is around what I would need after selling my wee Barlanark flat. It is a huge amount of money and I really don’t want to seem greedy or unreasonable. I am more grateful than you can possibly imagine for all the love and support, it has far lifted my battered spirits.”

Since launching the crowdfunder last night Paul has raised £2739 raised of his £50,000 goal.
