A DRUNK thug who spat at one police officer and threw a sandwich at another was jailed yesterday for 14 months.

Brian McAlpine, 46, turned on PCs Erin Simms and Connor McGowan in Glasgow in June this year.

The pair were attacked when taking McAlpine to hospital for treatment due to his drunken state.

McAlpine spat at PC Simms twice before hurling the sandwich given to him at the hospital.

McAlpine pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to PC Simms and two charges of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard McAlpine was found drunk on the street by the officers and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

McAlpine attempted to leave without notifying staff but was followed by the officers.

McAlpine was offered a ride to his brother’s house by police.

Prosecutor Amy Hunter said: “The accused spat at PC Simms while sitting in the back of the police vehicle. However, it did not strike her.”

A spit hood was applied before he was removed from the vehicle.

McAlpine lunged towards PC Simms and spat at her again but the saliva was caught inside the hood.

He was arrested and taken to a police station before being taken out again to another hospital due to his level of intoxication.

McAlpine’s handcuffs were removed when staff gave him food.

Miss Hunter added: “He threw the sandwich provided to him at PC McGowan narrowly missing his head, hitting the wall behind him.”

McAlpine was handcuffed again then stated: “When I see you in the street, I will put a bullet in you.”

He was later held in custody but was not cautioned and charged due to his drunk state.

Lawyer Michael O’Neill, defending, told the court had taken medication on top of his alcohol and had no recollection of the incident.

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC said: “You got yourself into a state and became a danger to people.

“By committing offences there is only one place that will take you.

“You need to take care of your health and don’t get yourself into this scenario again.”
