A DRUNK driver who tore through one-way streets in the wrong direction in Stirling city centre before crashing into a police car has been jailed for almost two years.

Alexander Jackson was sentenced for three separate incidents, encompassing eleven charges, at Alloa Sheriff Court on Thursday, November 5.

The 29-year-old appeared in court via video link, having been remanded in HMP Low Moss for the Stirling incident since September 21.

Prosecutor Susannah Hutchison said that incident took place in the early hours of September 19 this year.

A woman drove Jackson to a house party the night before, and at some stage that night he drove off in her car.

Ms Hutchison said: "Officers on mobile patrol at around 1.20am were driving along Cowane Street in Stirling when the accused's vehicle drove out in front of them.

"Upon reaching a roundabout, the accused's vehicle careered over the centreline and into the opposing carriageway.

"Officers signalled for the car to stop, and the accused's vehicle pulled into the near side, then accelerated away – causing a plume of smoke to be emitted from the exhaust.

"The accused reached speeds of 50mph, and was travelling at that speed on Drip Road."

Jackson then drove through the city centre, travelling the wrong way down one-way streets on several occasions.

Around that time, Ms Hutchison said members of the public were exiting licensed premises.

Officers ultimately abandoned their pursuit due to the nature of Jackson's driving, but later found him travelling the wrong way down Irvine Place.

There, he crashed head-on into the police car, and officers immediately exited their vehicle and smashed the window of his car.

Jackson then reversed, collide with another vehicle, then accelerated forward and crashed into the police car again.

He then made off, but was subsequently arrested, and a breath sample showed he had 65microgrammes of alcohol in 100millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 22mcg.

He was also disqualified from driving at the time.

That was one of two road traffic matters Jackson was in court to be sentenced for last week.

The other took place in Sauchie on December 2 last year, when he drove while disqualified, without insurance, and failed to report an accident.

And Jackson was also in court to be sentenced for what Sheriff Craig Harris called a "chilling" incident at an address in Clackmannanshire on January 5 this year.

On that date, he assaulted three people – his partner, a member of his partner's family and a child – as well behaving abusively by shouting and swearing.

In mitigation for the offences in Stirling, solicitor Larissa Milligan said it "was a case of absolute stupidity" and her client accepts that.

And in relation to the offences in Clackmannanshire, she said Jackson's partner wanted contact between herself and Jackson to continue.

She added that he could be assessed to see if he is suitable to participate in the Caledonian men's programme, which works to rehabilitate domestic offenders.

Sheriff Harris noted Jackson was appearing in court for his third drink-driving conviction, and his second for driving while disqualified.

He said a "significant custodial sentence is required" to mark the seriousness of the offences.

He then imprisoned Jackson, of Cowane Street in Stirling, for 18-months and disqualified him from driving for 64 months.

A non-harassment order was also put in place for two years, to protect Jackson's partner and the child he assaulted.
