A GROUP of women in the Wee County have last week completed a programme of litter picking for 2020, with plans to do more next year.

Women for Independence Clackmannanshire tackled rubbish in the town centre of Alloa, following on from earlier litter picks at Tillicoultry cycle path, Gartmorn Dam and surrounding areas, Tullibody and the Old Alloa Road.

Dollar woman Fiona McGregor said: “So far we have collected 31 sacks of litter which was spoiling our environment and local beauty spots.

“It has been a very rewarding experience because it is satisfying to see the results of our efforts, but also it is a safe way of enjoying some exercise and fresh air.

“We have split up to work in pairs to meet the two household limits while still enjoying a chat and a catch up with friends.

“We are taking a break over the Christmas period but we intend to start again in January - although we would love it if everyone's new year resolution could be to put their litter in the bin or take it home them.”

As reported previously, Woman for Independence Clackmannanshire decided to tackle rubbish to improve the Wee County and to get some fresh air, inspired by the efforts of Sauchie's Arron Uytendhal.

Arron had been out and about in the community throughout the lockdown months with his litter picker and cart – cleaning up his area.

Fiona previously told the Advertiser: “His example was an inspiration for us, he was really encouraging and gave us lots of suggestions."

She added: “It makes such a difference when we can all enjoy our beautiful surroundings without having them spoilt by the actions of what is probably a tiny minority of people.

“We are grateful to Clacks Council for their help in providing the equipment and taking away the sacks - we are hoping that by helping out with this activity it frees up the council's resources to tackle more difficult issues like fly tipping.”

Those keen to get involved, with the litter picking events open to anyone, are being encouraged to get involved by getting in touch through the Women for Independence Clackmannanshire Facebook page.
