LIFEBUOYS and throw ropes are to be installed at Clackmannanshire Bridge to help save those who have fallen in the water.

The move has been officially revealed in a police performance report, set to go in front of a meeting of Clackmannanshire Council's Partnership and Performance Committee on Thursday, March 11.

According to the report, the bridge has been identified as a "location of concern" and mental health crisis signs have been affixed to the parapet, signposting people to the Samaritans.

Over the years, the Advertiser has reported on a number of tragic incidents involving the deaths of people after falling in the water near the bridge, including a 28-year-old police officer in January 2020.

The report to be tabled said: "As a result of collaboration between the police, Clackmannan Development Trust, NHS Mental Health Services, the Samaritans, fire and rescue, Amey and Transport Scotland, the Clackmannanshire Bridge has been identified as a location of concern.

"Mental health crisis signs have been fixed to the bridge parapet signposting the Samaritans.

"Lifebuoys and throw ropes are being sourced by Transport Scotland and will be installed by Amey.

"Further work is ongoing to establish what additional measures may be effective at reducing loss of life at the bridge.

"This was a good example of collaborative working with partners to introduce control measures to protect life."
