CONSULTATION has begun on leisure provision in the Wee County.

Residents in Clacks are being encouraged to give their views on current and future provision after Clackmannanshire Council laid out ambitions for a wellbeing complex in Alloa.

As reported recently, the local authority has agreed to allocate £16.8million for the complex, including the option for a modern swimming pool.

The complex is to deliver more than just sport; council officers previously told elected representatives that the wellbeing campus could help redesign service delivery.

A council officer told the March 24 budget meeting: "In terms of the service design there are real opportunities in here, particularly around areas for women and girls, there's some really interesting stuff coming out of sportscotland on that and also around how we support things like mental health and wellbeing."

At the meeting officers committed to a "significant engagement exercise" and the council said they are already working with expert advice and support from sportscotland to engage with clubs, governing bodies, partners, major institutions, equalities groups and other stakeholders.

A council officer added at the budget meeting: "I should say there is tremendous enthusiasm from a range of partners and stakeholders on the ambition and inclusiveness of this project and particularly on the focus it has on wellbeing, health and economic and community learning and development."

The survey, which launched on Friday April 9, is to help inform and shape future service design and the views gathered will for part of the consideration of options which councillors will discuss at an upcoming meeting.

According to a timeline agreed at the budget meeting, interim leisure arrangements – in the wake of the closure of Alloa Leisure Bowl - are also to be put in place in some form with a decision to be made sometime between May and September this year.

Detailed designs, costs and more for the wellbeing complex will take around a year to complete.

The consultation is being carried out by the Clackmannanshire Alliance, which brings together the local authority with NHS, emergency services, the third sector and more.
