THE Speirs Centre will be lit up in purple during the first week of June to help pay tribute to the Wee County's many volunteers.

Volunteers came out in force during the coronavirus pandemic and are set to be recognised at the annual Wee County, Big Heroes awards in a few weeks.

The event, organised by Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSI), is moving online for the second year in a row and will be held between June 1 and 7.

As part of the wider week, the chimney of the Speirs Centre in Alloa will be lit up in the volunteering purple colour.

It is understood there are also hopes to place banners in central locations and at roundabouts to highlight Volunteers' Week and thank those who give up their own free time and lend their skills to help others.

CTSI is also creating an impact reel video to tell the stories of groups and volunteers as they responded to Covid-19.

The video will be premiered on Friday, June 4, during an online event starting at 6pm.

Meanwhile, the deadline for the awards - which will go ahead with a theme of Time to Say Thank You – is fast approaching this Friday, April 30.

Louise Orr, team leader for volunteering and routes to work at CTSI, said: “We are hoping the week will give some reason for as many people as possible to come together virtually and just reflect on the past year on how much has been done locally.”

She added that with everything changing at pace over the past more than a year, “it's been really difficult to just appreciate what has been done and how incredible everybody has been”.

To help groups and individuals show appreciation, CTSI has also created thank you cards that people can send out to volunteers.

These could go to the formal volunteers who regularly dedicate their time to help a cause, but also the informal volunteers who have just simply been helping their neighbours with the basics at their time of need.

To request cards or more information, people can email Louise at louise.orr@ctsi.org.uk or call 01259 213 840.
