A ONE-WAY system in Alloa's town centre was reversed at the weekend as part of improvement works that seek to create a safer environment.

Access to Mill Street has changed and is via a right hand turn at the bottom of Drysdale Street in the town since the changes came into force at the weekend.

The layby on the east side of High Street, located in front of the former has also been closed to allow more space for pedestrians to safely pass queues that form on the narrow section of the pavement.

On the other side of the street, the western layby has been reserved for loading between 6am and 11am as well as 4pm to 6pm.

This layby also includes two disabled parking spaces between 9am and 11am as well as 5pm to 6pm.

The changes by Clackmannanshire Council are aimed at reducing vehicle traffic and increasing active travel opportunities while ensuring there is sufficient space to accommodate queues outside shops.

Councillor Craig Holden, spokesman for environment and housing at the council, said: "I am pleased to see this range of practical improvement work being planned for Alloa Town Centre to keep everyone safe as we continue to move into the next phases of recovery from this pandemic."

A number of other changes have also been made and the adjustments made at the weekend follow a programme of work from last year through the Spaces for People and Places for Everyone initiatives.

The taxi rank on Mill Street has been closed, but the one on Drysdale Street has been extended by four spaces in exchange.

The former Mill Street rank has been changed to 20 minute parking bays and loading bays between 9am and 5pm.

Minor changes have also been made to the end of Shillinghill and Auld Brig Road to make it easier for buses to join the roundabout.
