AN ALLOA woman will be braving the shave to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, in honour of her late father.

Audrey Muir will be shaving off her 16-inch hair for the cancer charity next month, to thank them for caring for her dad in the final days of his battle with cancer.

Robert, a former signalman on the railways got and four year SNP Alloa councillor, passed away aged 79 last March.

Audrey will brave the shave on July 16 and is aiming to raise a total of £300.

Following his passing Audrey wanted to give back to the people that helped so much in his final days.

She told the Advertiser: "My dad passed away at home, as per his wishes. It was the Macmillan nurses who looked after him to let my mum have a break.

"When he died we asked everyone at the funeral to donate to Macmillan. Unfortunately, because I was looking after my mum I didn't get a chance to donate at the time.

"I wanted to give something back."

Audrey described her dad as her hero and added: "He would work twelve-hour shifts on the railway and then start doing his council work and he did all of this while supporting our family.

"He absolutely adored his two grandsons Kyle and Rory. They kept him going through his illness."

Audrey said that shaving her hair is good way to raise money and say thank you to the Macmillan nurses who cared for her father in his final days.

She is being supported by her friends and family, with her family all sponsoring her.

Audrey's colleagues at the Alloa branch of Asda have also got on board with a sponsor sheet being posted in her work.

The Wee County community is getting behind Audrey, with Sauchie based business ACE Recycling sponsoring her and other sponsor sheets being posted in Tesco, Morrisons and B&M.

She added: "Everyone is saying that I'm brave but I don't see it as being brave, I'm choosing to shave my head but people with cancer don't have that choice. They are the brave ones."

Staff from Bleu hairdressers in Sauchie will be carrying out the shave and Audrey is looking at how Covid restrictions will allow people to attend.
