ALLOA'S largest park is set for a facelift after £372,000 was approved for upgrades and repairs

The West End Park will benefit from repairs and maintenance works, improved accessibility, enhanced play provision, an outdoor gym and more as part of the funding.

Elected representatives approved the plans at last Thursday's, June 24, council meeting but there were calls in the virtual Kilncraigs chamber for more to be done.

Cllr Kenny Earle, an Alloa resident, explained he was looking forward to taking advantage of the outdoor gym.

However, he added: "I do note that although the leader [Cllr Ellen Forson] went through a lot of things that are going to be positive for West End Park in this regard, there's no mention made of the provision of toilets.

"We have a park, we are going to have [outdoor] gym facilities, but as long as the toilets remain locked it's a bit of a moot point.

"I would encourage the leader of the council to look closely at opening the toilets once we have that investment in West End Park."

Responding, the council leader revealed the local authority has been in discussions with third sector partners on taking forward toilet provision.

She said: "We recognise that it is an area that would enhance the overall amenities there at the park."

Speaking after the meeting, she added: "We know how much parks and open spaces have been valued by our communities during the pandemic and I am delighted to be able to confirm this £372,000 investment in the West End Park in Alloa.

"Greater use of parks and play areas during the pandemic has emphasised the importance of these facilities for the physical and mental health of our communities.

"However, the increased level of engagement with public open spaces has led to increased wear and tear on infrastructure such as car parks, roads and footpaths and play equipment.

"It's important that we provide the best possible outdoor space for everyone to enjoy."

The funding comes from a share of an additional £40million which was provided to councils by the Scottish Government.

Proposals for enhanced play provision include the creation of a "destination play area" for younger children, a large adventure item for older children and the outdoor gym for adults.

Council documents added that summertime consultation with younger people and other park users will help inform the proposals.

In terms of accessibility, the aim is to enable more people to take advantage by enhancing the road and footpath network.

This will include the widening of paths in some places to make them suitable for both cycling and walking.
