PLANS to create a Care Hub at Cavalry Park in Peebles are on hold pending the result of an appeal later this month.

Following the closure of a number of facilities in the area, DDL Care Services recognised the need for a Hub and plans were drawn up to utilise the downstairs part of the current building at 3 Rowan Court.

DDL currently provides all aspects of personal care, home assistance, physical rehabilitation support, palliative care and social care and the Hub would supplement that by including a multi-functional therapy room, spa/showering facilities, exercise room, fully accessible enablement kitchen, café, quiet room and training suite.

An application was submitted to Scottish Borders Council but the planning officer refused on the ground that it would ‘not be complimentary or ancillary to the Cavalry Park Strategic High Amenity Site and would result in a loss of high-quality office accommodation.’

DDL believes that rejection would lead to a number of negative consequences including an increase in hospital admissions, increase in social isolation, increase in residential care placements and a decrease in people being able to stay in their own homes.

Director Donna-Dee Lamb said: “As a company we are very passionate about the care and support that we provide and we believe that the facilities being offered by the Care Hub are needed now more than ever. The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an increase in social isolation and a deterioration in mental and physical health.

“The range of facilities being offered will improve the physical health and emotional wellbeing of those attending and it will become a valuable and integral resource in the community which will be open to all, regardless of the level of care that is required.

“The Care Hub will also be a much-needed resource for the family and friends of those who require support. The loss of routine and limited access to services over the last 18 months has resulted in an increase in carers stress.

“The Care Hub will provide a support facility and network to family and friends, and they can also be reassured that their loved ones are attending a safe and comfortable environment.”

The appeal will be heard by five local councillors on the ‘Local Review Body’ on 16 August.
