NEARLY two dozen Wee County venues and sites will throw their doors open this September.

Doors Open Days is set to return for the 32nd year with the Wee County programme co-ordinated by Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust.

Alloa Fire Station, Alva Ice House, the Johnstone Mausoleum, historic medieval towers and churches are all among the properties and places taking part this year.

In-person events, will take place across Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26, with organisations and volunteers offering free access.

The wider festival aims to make Scotland's built and cultural heritage accessible to everyone and is organised nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust.

Dr Susan O'Connor, director of the trust, said: “Hundreds of venues across the country are busy behind-the-scenes organising events, planning walking tours and creating videos and other virtual activities for visitors.

“We’re particularly excited to welcome visitors back into buildings so we can all enjoy our shared history in-person once again.”

In Clacks, Alloa Fire Station will offer guided tours on both days, showing off its three appliances, including specialist vehicles for urban search and rescue and heavy rescue.

One of the largest and finest of its type in Scotland, Alloa Tower will also welcome visitors on both days, between 12noon and 4pm.

The impressive Alva Ice House, built circa 1820, will also offer guided tours on both days between 12noon and 4pm, but is not suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties.

On Saturday, September 25, guided tours will be on offer at the Alva Old Kirkyard and Johnstone Mausoleum at 10am and 11am.

The mausoleum was originally built in 1791 with columns of the Greek Doric order flanking the entrance.

It was designed by Robert and James Adam for John Johnstone, who was buried there with his wife and later six of their descendants.

It is one of only four Adam mausolea in Scotland and was later extended in the 19th century.

Heritage walks will also take place across the Wee County in Alloa and Clackmannan while a historic walk is scheduled for Dollar, starting at the museum at 2pm on both days.
